During the floods in October 2024, the Doljanka River in Jablanica suffered significant damage — the plant and animal life was severely affected, and the previously developed Radak beach area was destroyed. The association “Za Doljanku” and several activists, who had been working for years through the “Radi za Radak” campaign to have the beach officially recognized as a bathing area, have now, with the support of PRAGG, shifted their focus to the issue of illegal dumping sites that pose an ongoing threat of river pollution.
Particularly critical is the dumping site in the Baćine neighborhood, from which a large amount of waste ended up in the Doljanka during the floods, near the beach itself. According to the Jablanica Municipality Waste Management Plan, there are at least 6 larger and 20 smaller illegal dumpsites in the area, while non-governmental organizations estimate there may be more than 30.
At the end of June and beginning of July, activists held meetings with representatives of the local community and a citizens’ assembly, during which the cleanup and remediation of the Baćine dumpsite was adopted as a top priority. Thanks to the “Radi za Radak” campaign initiative, the municipal budget for illegal dumpsite remediation was increased by 100% compared to the previous year.
In the coming period, activists plan to meet with relevant municipal departments, launch an initiative to close the dumpsite and install a larger number of waste containers, along with continuing an informational and educational campaign about the harmful effects of illegal dumping and the importance of responsible waste disposal.
