A street action was held at Rudar Square in Breza as part of the campaign "Give Priority Even When You (Don’t) See a Reason," launched with PRAGG support. Numerous citizens showed interest in learning more about the campaign’s goal – introducing priority rights for parents and guardians of children with developmental disabilities in all public institutions and facilities within the municipality of Breza.
Citizens engaged in conversations with volunteers and parents/guardians of people with developmental disabilities and gave their full support to the initiative, which aims to ease their everyday lives and reduce waiting times in lines.
One of the public figures who supported the campaign is professional basketball player from Breza, Emir Ahmedović, who emphasized the importance of collective support:
“As a professional athlete, I know how much support matters – both on and off the court! That’s why I stand with parents and children with disabilities, because they fight their own battles every single day. Giving them priority in queues isn’t about pity – it’s about respect and understanding. If we each contribute a little, we can make a big difference for those who truly need it,” said Emir.
Ilma Omerhodžić, a member of the Center for Positive Practices and psychologist at the Center for Social Work, spoke about the analysis conducted by the Center, which determined the exact number of people with developmental disabilities and their parents or guardians in the municipality of Breza. All of them could benefit from priority rights in public institutions.
“I don't think we were fully aware of how important this campaign would be for families with people with developmental disabilities, but every day people reach out with questions and support. I believe raising awareness in our society has never been more important – not only because of the rising number of developmental challenges, but also because early intervention can significantly ease life for both the children and their families. But before people can act, it’s essential to create a safe environment that supports and understands them,” emphasized Ilma Omerhodžić.
As part of this campaign, the Center for Positive Practices submitted an initiative to the Breza Municipal Council to introduce priority rights, and also prepared a promotional video showcasing the daily challenges faced by these families.
The initiative has already been supported by the Mayor of Breza, Vedad Jusić, and municipal councilors. Public figures from Breza have also joined the campaign, including writer Emina Smailbegović, basketball player Emir Ahmedović, and others.
