On December 9, 2024, in Jablanica, within the framework of the campaign "Radi za Radak," a Round Table titled "Measures for Environmental Protection in the Doljanka River Basin" was held. The event was attended by representatives of the cantonal and municipal government, civil society organizations, and activists from the Jablanica Municipality. The discussion focused on the current state of the Doljanka River basin following the accident that affected Jablanica Municipality on October 4, 2024. The participants also reviewed the environmental protection measures for the Doljanka River that were in place prior to this unfortunate event. The focus was placed on finding appropriate solutions and taking further steps to clean and rehabilitate the riverbed, followed by the implementation of permanent protective measures for the entire river basin.
Key issues highlighted included the existence of an illegal waste disposal site that, even before the accident, contributed to the river's pollution, and the flash floods that led to all the deposited waste being washed into the Doljanka River, which subsequently carried it into the Neretva River.
Another cause of pollution identified was the unresolved wastewater management system in the Zlate settlement, which also contributed to the river's contamination prior to the accident. As a consequence of the disaster, it was noted that there are currently no recorded samples of trout, which once had their spawning grounds and natural habitat in the Doljanka River.
Based on the above and the presented factual situation, the following conclusions were formulated at the Round Table:
We hope that all those to whom these conclusions have been delivered will take them into consideration and, within their areas of responsibility, implement appropriate measures to contribute to the remediation of the current situation and ensure permanent protection measures for the Doljanka River.
