A successful forum was held in Sanski Most, bringing together candidates for the mayoral position and the citizens to discuss one of the important issues facing the community - how to address the problem of stray dogs. The candidates for mayor of Sanski Most - Nijaz Kadirić (NES), Almin Hopovac (SDP BiH), and Mensur Seferović (SDA) - directly promised the citizens that if elected, they would create a new plan for managing stray dogs and that it would be one of their top priorities!

Nijaz Kadrić, in his address, stated: "If I am elected mayor, we will solve this problem within 90 days. The first decision will be to build a shelter for dogs". Mensur Seferović also spoke optimistically, saying: "I can guarantee that addressing this issue will be our priority. However, this problem cannot be solved by politics alone; everyone needs to get involved. We support the activities of the Network of Young Activists and I can say they will have our backing". Almin Hopovac emphasized the importance of cooperation between the government and non-governmental sectors, asserting: "We need to be humane towards animals. It is crucial to chip and sterilize dogs and provide them with humane shelter. I believe the previous administration did not do enough to address the issue of stray dogs, and we need qualified professionals to handle this problem, along with support from the non-governmental sector".

On behalf of the Municipal Administration, Elvis Pašić, assistant mayor of Sanski Most, addressed citizens' questions regarding what has been done so far to tackle the issue. The discussion also included Admir Talić, the director of the Veterinary Station in Sanski Most, who stated that the station has sufficient capacity to handle the management of stray dogs. Throughout the discussion, citizens made a strong case that the problem has not been adequately addressed thus far, aside from cosmetic measures. The candidates for mayor promised the citizens that they would involve them, along with the non-governmental sector, in future solutions to the problem!

To recap, the issue of stray dogs has been a significant problem in Sanski Most since 2005 and has been steadily increasing since then. It is estimated that there are over 200 stray dogs in the area at any given time. This issue is characteristic of the entire municipality of Sanski Most, but the focus is primarily on the city center, where it is more pronounced. It's worth noting that the municipality has around 40,000 residents, nearly 15,000 of whom live in the urban core. The alarm was raised in December 2021 when stray dogs attacked and injured an 11-year-old boy in the urban area of Sanski Most, leading to protests in the town.
