Today, a successful street action was held at the City Square in Bihać as part of the campaign "We Will Not Die in Silence," aimed at gathering signatures in support of amendments to the Criminal Code of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This event was organized as part of the project "FOR Better Protection of Women from Violence in the FBiH," carried out by the Women's Voice Bihać Organization, Foundation CURE Sarajevo, Women's Vision Tuzla, the Tim Volim Život Cazin Association, and the Izvor Sanski Most Association.
During the action, citizens signed a petition to support the initiative to introduce femicide as a separate criminal offense in the Criminal Code of the FBiH.
Neira Raković, the project coordinator, emphasized: "Femicide is the most severe form of gender-based violence, and its legal definition as a distinct criminal offense is crucial for providing adequate protection for women. Our campaign aims to ensure legal recognition and appropriate punishment for this crime, which is essential for ensuring the safety of women in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina."
In addition to Neira Raković, Božna Čirić from the Women's Voice also gave a statement to the media: "We are all aware that femicide is a rapidly growing problem in the FBiH. Without appropriate legal regulation, combating this crime is challenging. Today, we demonstrated solidarity and determination to fight for fairer legislation that will protect women from violence."
The initiative has been supported, among others, by Bihać Mayor Elvedin Sedić, the Minister of Internal Affairs of USK Adnan Habibija, and GV Bihać Councilor Elvira Selmanović.
The "We Will Not Die in Silence" campaign aims to collect 10,000 signatures in support of the initiative to amend the Criminal Code of the FBiH, submit this initiative to the Federal Parliament, and ensure that the amendments are placed on the parliamentary agenda.
The statistics are alarming: according to UNODC, there were a total of 78 femicide cases recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 2015 and 2022, and in the first half of 2024, 7 women were killed. These figures clearly indicate the urgent need for legal changes.
We call on all citizens to join our fight by signing in support of this initiative and thus contribute to better protection for women in the Federation of BiH. For more information about the campaign and the project, visit our website at www.zenskamreza.ba or our Facebook page Ženska mreža BiH.
