(Tuzla, June 19, 2025) – In the heart of Tuzla, those who believe in dialogue, understanding, and the courage to create change have gathered for years. That’s why this year’s PRAGG Festival was held right here—among people who keep the flame of change alive.

The PRAGG Festival, “Positive Stories from Bosnia and Herzegovina,” once again demonstrated that culture, creativity, and solidarity can bring together people of different generations and ideas. Around 100 participants from 36 PRAGG communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina took part over two days in dynamic discussions, engaging programming, inspiring stories, and a unique blend of togetherness and social activism—all supported by the Government of Switzerland, which, through the PRAGG project, empowers citizens to drive positive change in their communities.

This third edition of the PRAGG Festival focused on bringing together different voices—from local communities to creating space for new ideas.

We were especially honored that the festival was opened by the Swiss Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, H.E. Gabriele Derighetti, who emphasized the importance of such initiatives for the long-term stability and social progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina:

“We believe that building a democratic society is as much a process as it is a goal. Over the past three decades, we have been a reliable and long-term partner to the government, civil society, and the citizens of BiH in strengthening accountable governance, the rule of law, social inclusion, and economic development for all people in BiH,” stated Swiss Ambassador Gabriele Derighetti.
“Given the close ties between our two countries, Switzerland will continue to support BiH on its path toward European integration and in building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future,” he added.
The Mayor of Tuzla, Dr. Zijad Lugavić, who attended the festival opening, stressed the importance of local communities as drivers of positive change and social cohesion:

“Tuzla has always been a city of progressive ideas and solidarity-driven action, and I’m proud we are part of this year’s PRAGG Festival and its positive momentum.”
“In a time when negative narratives dominate public space, it is crucial to highlight trust, unity, and the changes that happen when people act together. Through the PRAGG project, with Swiss support, we are showing that local initiatives have the power to transform society—when we listen to and support them, they become beacons of hope and examples of real, bottom-up change,” said Nikolina Vilov Mahmutović, PRAGG Communications Manager.
The event was enriched by initiatives led by PRAGG grantees—organizations and individuals whose efforts are strengthening communities across BiH. Through a live studio-format program, participants shared real changes from their communities, exchanged experiences, and inspired one another.

Of special value was the participation of representatives from communities just beginning their PRAGG journey, as the festival gave them a chance to see what is possible.

“This festival gave us the opportunity to present our work and also learn how creativity can be a powerful tool for social change. Together, we proved that the most can be achieved when we truly listen to one another,” said Edisa Demić, representative of the “Dignitet” Association and the PRAGG initiative for the functioning of the Cantonal Institute for Free Legal Aid.
The third PRAGG Festival may have ended, but the energy and ideas that emerged from the gathering of people who share the same values and work for a better tomorrow will live on. This event is a reminder that activism can be the foundation for building bridges, understanding, and joint action—leaving a lasting mark that reminds us change is most powerful at the local level, where ordinary people can see and feel it. Together, we shape a better future and can move the boundaries of positive change ourselves.

We extend our sincere thanks to all media outlets—both national and local—as well as to representatives of local authorities for their strong interest and presence throughout both days of the Festival. The media are an essential part of civil society, and we are glad they continue to recognize the importance of local success stories and civic activism that we promote together through the PRAGG project.

PRAGG is funded by the Government of Switzerland and implemented by the consortium of HELVETAS and NIRAS in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in partnership with Centres for Civic Initiatives (CCI) and Institute for Youth Development KULT.
